Here are some helpful tips from MoveMate to help you pack for your next move. Whether you are moving apartments for the first time or it is the one hundredth time that you move, these tips will be useful to know or, at least, to remind.

Tip # 1: Don’t procrastinate the booking of your move

It might be tempting to start the new season of Brooklyn Nine Nine or scroll through baking tutorials for your next project, but procrastinating packing will only give you less time to pack. Mark a date in your calendar to start packing and stick to a schedule. Make sure to set aside time each day to pack so that when moving day comes, you will be all ready to go.

Tip #2: Use clothing to cushion to avoid breaking fragile items

Instead of just packing clothing together, make use of soft items such as clothing, towels and dish rags to wrap breakables. Pillows and bedding make great fillers in half full boxes to prevent the contents from bouncing around. This is an essential step to ensure that your fragile items have an extra layer of cushioning during your move.

Tip #3: Don’t mix and match objects. Organise the boxes you want to move.

Try to pack items by room. Don’t pack books from your bedroom with cutlery from your kitchen. If you clearly sort items by room, it will make unpacking them so much easier and setting up your new home will be hassle free.

Tip #4: Label boxes

Packing up your stuff by room will not work if you don’t remember to label your boxes. Take a big black sharpie marker and write which room the box should be put in and a brief description of its contents. For example, a box of kitchen supplies might be labelled “Kitchen/Plates.” Adding descriptive labels will also let the movers know which boxes contain fragile items.

Tip #5: Sort boxes from heavy to light

On the day of your move, be sure to organize your boxes by weight so movers can quickly load them into their vehicle. The heavier boxes should go on the bottom and the lighter boxes on top. If you place the heavier boxes closer to the door, it will speed up the process even more.
